Before this semester started, I regretted choosing NaSc 10
(Forest as a Source of Life) in my GE plan, but now I’m really glad I picked
it. For the second time we had our classes outside the four corners of our
room. We went up to Forestry to try some of the fruits discussed in our
lecture.
The first thing that I tried (since we were late because it is really
hard to catch a jeepney that is going up) was a leaf of a tree that actually
tasted like green mangoes. At first I hesitated but I can see most of my
classmates grabbing even just a bit to taste for themselves, so I thought, heck
why not? In fact I even got amused while munching on it because the leaf was
really crispy and seriously you can imagine yourself eating a green mango
instead.
We walked around the place, trying different kinds of wild fruits and
leaves, following our professor and waiting on him to try the first bite. I
actually refused to taste a few leaves and fruits but aside from the first leaf
that I ate ever, I got to taste a wild fruit that tastes like a guyabano, only
it was way smaller and sweeter, a leaf that smelled and tasted like hotdogs
(seriously, hotdogs) which really engrossed and intrigued us the most and two
leaves that tasted like leaves but each with a distinct taste of two fruits I
can’t seem to remember.
Despite having to walk on twigs and dirt and be paranoid about being bitten by ants and mosquitoes the whole freaking time, I actually
enjoyed the whole experience. No sugarcoating, I swear. I'm not the outdoor girl type, but I really got giddy like a little girl the whole time. I really am thankful I got to be in this class. I
hope we could do this again.
I even heard somebody say that it was like we were
in the Hunger Games, with the place and all, and the experience too. Survival
lang ang peg. Indeed, the whole experience is something. I certainly won’t
forget the day that we ate leaves and wild fruits in class.
Looking forward to a next one, ciao!
